Never burn your fingers on a hot soup bowl again.

The finished bowl cozy — made with two fat quarters and 100% cotton batting.

If you make one sewing project this month, make it this one. A bowl cozy is a little fabric hug for your soup, oatmeal or ice-cream bowl — it goes in the microwave with the bowl, so you can carry hot food to the table without a potholder dance.

It’s also the project my readers sell most at craft fairs: it uses two fat quarters, takes about 20 minutes, and everyone who sees one wants three. Total beginner? Perfect — if you can sew a mostly-straight line, you can make this today.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Cut your fabric & batting

Two fabric squares and two batting squares laid out on a cutting mat with a rotary cutter and quilting ruler

Step 1 — Two 10″ squares of fabric + two of batting

Cut two 10-inch squares from your fabric and two from the cotton batting. For a larger soup bowl, go up to 11 inches — the cozy scales beautifully.

2

Quilt an X on each side

Step 2 — Stitch corner to corner, twice

Layer one fabric square (right side up) on one batting square. Sew diagonally corner to corner, then again on the other diagonal to make an X. Repeat with the second set.

3

Sew the darts

Folded fabric square with chalk-marked dart lines held by pins, ready to sew

Step 3 — Fold, mark 1″ × 2″, stitch the dart

Fold each square in half, mark 1 inch in from the fold and 2 inches down, and sew the dart. Repeat on all four sides of both squares — this is what gives the cozy its bowl shape.

4

Trim & join the two halves

Two bowl cozy halves pinned right sides together with dart seams nested flat

Step 4 — Nest the seams, pin right sides together

Trim the dart excess. Place the two halves right sides together, nest the dart seams so they lay flat, and pin all the way around.

5

Sew around & turn

Step 5 — Leave a 3″ gap for turning

Sew around the edge with a ¼-inch seam, leaving a 3-inch gap. Turn the cozy right side out through the gap and push the corners out gently with a chopstick.

6

Topstitch & enjoy!

Step 6 — Topstitch ⅛″ from the edge

Press flat, tuck the gap edges in, and topstitch all the way around. Done! Pop your bowl in, microwave as usual, and carry it to the table — no burnt fingers, ever.
